Breast enlargement / augmentation
The choice to undergo breast enlargement is a very personal decision. Dr Randle and his staff feel that a well informed patient is a good patient.
Reasons for Breast Enlargement
The two most common reasons for breast enlargement are insufficient development and post pregnancy shrinkage. Some patients may require a lift procedure if the nipples or breast tissue are too low.
Breast implants
Two main types of breast implants are current. Silicon (gel implants are most commonly used. They are made by number of different companies. They are shaped as round or anatomical (tear drop). Their surface can be smooth or textured. Some implant manufacturers provide a coating on their implant surface in an effort to reduce contracture. The second type of implant used is a saline implant. This is an implant made of silicone shell filled with saline (salt water). As a general rule the gel implants tend to feel more natural and has a less tendency to cause rippling.
Consultation
Consultation with Dr Randle is the best way of acquiring information to see if you are a candidate for breast augmentation surgery. A medical history will be taken and a breast examination preformed to assess suitability for the procedure. You will also be shown the various types and sizes of implants. A good way to get an idea or your desired size is to try the implants in a bra and view your breast profile in a mirror.
Before surgery
Please give a list of all medicines you are taking or have taken. Avoid aspirin, medicines containing aspirin. Anti inflammatory medicines including those obtained over the counter, vitamins and herbal medicines they should be stopped 10 days prior to surgery. Smoking increases surgical and anaesthetic complications and should be stoped 2 weeks before surgery. Blood tests or x rays mammograms or other tests may be done in some patients prior to surgery. You will be advised to get a support bra with front fastening to provide comfort after surgery.
Surgery
We perform our surgeries at approved accredited hospitals (see hospitals we operate at in credentials link). The surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia administered by a specialist anaesthetist. The majority of our patients stay overnight. It is a good idea to arrange for a family member or friend to drive you to and back from the hospital and have someone at home for 24 hours or so after being discharged from hospital.
Where the surgical cut or incision is made will depend on your breast shape and where the scars are best placed. In general the three places for the surgical incisions are underneath the breast (inframammary), around the outer edge of areola (periareolar), or in the arm pit (transaxillary)
Implants are placed behind the muscle or behind the breast. The choice will be decided at the consultation prior to surgery.
In our practice dissolving stitches are used and drains rarely.
After Surgery
You will be transferred from recovery to a ward where the nursing staff will look after you. Discomfort and pain are relieved by medicines given through an intravenous drip or by mouth. The discomfort usually last a few days after surgery. Do not drive under the influence of pain killers or sedatives.
Risks of Surgery
Any surgical procedure or anaesthesia carries risks. Specific risks of breast implant surgery will be discussed at consultation.
Costs
An estimate of the total cost will be given to you after consultation. The total cost is an combination of our surgical fee and other fees independent of our practice. These are anaesthetic fee, hospital fees, implant fees and any other costs which may apply. Please call our office for a general estimate of the costs.
