A strip of hair bearing scalp is removed from the back of the head and cut into smaller units containing 1 - 5 hairs. These units are then transplanted into the balding region.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes 3 - 6 hours. In general patients and can return to work with 5 days. Patients can go home the same day.

Most of the hair starts to grow in about 3 - 4 months and stabilizes at 8 - 12 months. The amount to be transplanted depends on the degree of baldness. Another session of hair transplantation may have to be performed a year or so later if significant fullness is desired.
